Home-Start Southern Oxfordshire case study - Emma. Woman walking with child rear view.

Emma was a mum to three children Archie (5), Tom (3) and Lily (9 months).

Archie had been displaying challenging behaviour and a diagnosis of suspected autism was expected. He got very distressed when leaving the home and had lots of tantrums when out and about.

Emma found it difficult to manage the other children and worryingly Tom was starting to copy some of Archie’s behaviours.

A Home-Start volunteer, Gill, was introduced to the family. Gill spent time talking to Emma about ideas which might help prepare Archie for going out. She accompanied the family on trips, offering an extra pair of hands with the two younger children so Emma could focus on Archie.

Over time, and through a consistent child centred approach, Emma started to feel more confident around Archie. Archie got to know Gill well, enjoyed spending 1:1 time with her which also gave Emma time to spend with the two younger children. Archie realised Gill would have a routine each time she came. This predictability led to calmer behaviour and Tom stopped copying Archie.

Emma is now much more positive about the future and managing the children well.
